Widnes and Runcorn emerged as global leaders during the Chemical Revolution, driving the production of alkali, soap, and a wide range of industrial chemicals. Their success grew from strategic access to the River Mersey and canal networks, along with nearby sources of essential raw materials. As Halton expanded, it became known for chemical innovation and early soap manufacturing that helped accelerate international trade. Today, this rich industrial heritage can be explored at the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and Museum, which is the site of Gossage & Sons former headquarters.
