K- Keep

Perched on top of Halton Hill, with glorious views of the River Mersey, the original Halton Castle began and a wooden motte-and-bailey before being rebuilt in sandstone during the 13th century. When the 15th baron of Halton, later King Henry IV took the throne, the castle became property of the Duchy of Lancaster.

During the English Civil War, the Royalist-held fortress was attacked by Parliamentary forces in 1643, after several weeks of fighting, the Royalists surrendered but later regained control. By 1650 the castle had fallen into ruin, though its courthouse remained in use until 1908 and today is the home of The Castle Pub.
