J - (Silver) Jubilee Bridge
Opening in 1961 to replace the old transporter bridge, at the time of construction the iconic "Runcorn Bridge" had the third longest steel arch span in the world. It transformed from an effective cul-de-sac into a town with through traffic which significantly improved trade routes. In 1977 the bridge was renamed to "Silver Jubilee Bridge" to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Over time traffic on the bridge grew to over 80,000 vehicles per day, to alleviate this the Mersey Gateway Bridge was built.
