O - Oglet Beach

Locally known as “the Oggie,” the name Oglet comes from an Anglo‑Saxon term meaning “oaks by the water.” For 120 years, from 1838 to 1958, this small lighthouse served as a vital navigational aid, guiding nautical traffic safety into the Upper Mersey. Though no longer operational, Hale Head Lighthouse still stands as a quiet landmark, offering scenic views across the Wirral, North Wales, and the distant ships moving along the horizon. Described as the “last rural” area of Liverpool, Oglet Beach was a favourite beach of Sir Paul McCartney during his childhood.
