Widstock

By the late 1990s, Widnes wasn’t exactly known as a cultural hotspot. But for six glorious summers, Victoria Park became the beating heart of a grassroots music revolution. From 1999 to 2004, Widstock was the free festival that gave local talent a stage and the community a reason to gather.

Dreamed up by park ranger Jane McDonald (Rhodes) and DIY music champion Pete Bentham, Widstock was never about big budgets or big egos. Bands played for nothing more than a cold drink and a veggie burger, yet the vibe was priceless.

Backed by Jaki Florek and the Loose Music Collective, funded by the Splash Fund, and sponsored by The Bigger Picture, it was a celebration of everything raw and real in the local scene. Artists included the likes of local Lee Wylding, where his early band Warped played at Widstock in 2002 before becoming in more recent years The Fireflys and The Far North.

Each year, families rolled up with picnic blankets while the town’s musicians plugged in and turned up. From indie hopefuls to punk provocateurs, Widstock was a hotbed of creativity, embraced by a community that knew the value of live music. Roy Jones, Halton Borough Council’s music officer, lent his support ensuring the festival stayed true to its mission: music for everyone.

The story didn’t end there. In 2019, Widstock’s spirit roared back for its 20th Anniversary at the Snig Pub in West Bank. Organised by Jane Rhodes and Gary Gleavey of Zen Baseballbat, and supported by the Snig, the reunion proved the festival’s legacy was alive and kicking. Old faces, new bands, and the same DIY ethos, Widstock still mattered!

In an era before social media hype, Widstock thrived on word of mouth and pure passion. It wasn’t Glastonbury, and that was the point. It was Widnes, loud, proud, and united under the summer sun. It’s legacy still hums through the local scene. Proof that sometimes the best festivals aren’t the biggest, just the ones that matter most.
