The Stone Roses

Spike Island is the now a legendary location and subject of a feature film of the same name, thanks to The Stone Roses landing there on 27th May 1990.

Gareth Evans, The Stone Roses manager came up with the idea and along with concert promoter Phil Jones and Roger Barratt, who ran a staging company, the bands desire to do things differently was soon to become a reality.

The Madchester scene was alive and well in Halton with the Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets all playing The Queens Hall all in 1989.

Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary “Mani” Mountfield (1962-2025) and Drummer Alan “Reni” Wren made Spike Island, the site of first chemical factory in Widnes hallowed ground for Roses fans forever.

Lemons, bucket hats and paint splatters stretched as far as the eye could see with nearly 30,000 fans gathering for unforgettable day which was captured by Ian Tilton, the official photographer. With images such as Ian Brown and the glowing Globe, Tilton inadvertently provided the evidence that the band members of the yet to be established Oasis, had attended, including 16-year-old Liam Gallagher. Noel was working as The Stone Roses roadie after failing to become their singer.

The Stone Roses Running Order

With stories of fans climbing fences and the wind wiping the sound around, those who were there, understand the importance of the day and it’s electric, fizzing atmosphere. Many local fans were unable to believe this huge event was happening in their hometown.

Michael Livesley, local musician and actor remembers being wrestled to the ground by security as he tried to get close to his idols before they sound checked. He was helped up Ian Brown and Mani who saw he was no danger to them and “only a ****ing kid!” The fans were then able to come over for signings and photos.

The gig was commemorated on the site by The Clone Roses in 2021.

Halton Show music tent was an annual highlight for the local music scene with

Poisoned Electrick Head, The Snakeskins, The Ryecatchers, The Resurrection of Richard Joy/ A Boy Called Mary, Lazy Mary, Zen Baseballbat and more.

The galligu’s Spikeybike trailer stage also made the area it’s home in the early 2000’s including bands such as Loki, The Chimps, Skecher and Becrazed.
